The site of the residential complex is located in the Petrogradsky district, in a city environment that has taken its shape a while ago, near the Petrogradskaya metro station. It provides yet another example of a successful renovation of a former industrial area by the Evgeny Gerasimov and Partners architectural workshop: the site used to host the Elektrik plant. The other examples include the Tsarskaya Stolitsa and Futurist residential complexes, the redevelopment draft for Khimvolokno and Plastpolimer plants, the reconstruction project of the premises of Krasny Treugolnik plant.

The outside finish of the complex as a whole bears a contemporary style. In all the buildings, a ventilated suspended facades system is used with a facing of ceramic panels. Europa City is one of the major Russian “ceramic” projects, both by volume and by the diversity of shades applied in the facing.

Seven nine-storey residential buildings with integrated premises are located along the site perimeter. The architecture of the facades is inspired by the corridor-like development typical for the old part of the city. Every façade is divided into sections, each having a unique façade pattern and colour, which makes the sections look like separate buildings. The patterns were designed in collaboration with the SPEECH bureau, and the sections are strictly alternating.

The inner-block buildings facings are designed by young architects - winners of a special contest for the best design of a residential house façade. The contest was conducted under the guidance of the Union of Architects of Saint Petersburg and the Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Saint Petersburg in collaboration with the project owner of the Europa City residential complex. The block contains ten 13-storey residential buildings, which are arranged in two rows, symmetric about the main axis of the block. The axis is a broad landscaped pedestrian area with sports grounds and recreational areas. The project also provides for a single-level underground garage.

The residential buildings construction technology was based upon standard panel construction using concrete monolithic structures. The architects set themselves a challenging task: to change the image of the panel housebuilding and to show that it can, too, create comfort and be effective.
