The Nikolsky market building is a federal cultural heritage object. The concept of adapting the Nikolsky market building to presentday needs involves locating a multifunctional hotel and business complex at the territory: a hotel, business office area, shopping area, recreational area, and underground 2-level parking lot. The main task of the suggested concept is to ‘include' new organizational, structural and architectural realties in the context of the former Nikolsky market building, while taking into consideration the historical and architectural significance and preservation status of the object. The idea of integrating tradition and innovation in the architectural concept sets the mission of overall renovation of the culture-significant object with preserving its historical faсades and expanding its area through designing the underground and courtyard space covered by translucent roof over long-span structures. Vicinity of old and new architectures involves both conflict and compromise: scale contrast between the extended market building and the courtyard capacity; precise proportions and laconism of stylistic and compositional techniques of the atrium space emphasize the historic significance of Nikolsky market classical faсades; the atrium serves as an integrating element of the complex and smoothens the effect of the perimeter insularity of the courtyard. The complex's expressive volumetric composition creates the dynamic multi-layer interior. Tatlin MONO 4/13/67 2008 |
